I'm Mario Stocco, thanks for visiting! For more than a decade, I have used this site as a place to experiment with different web technologies and also to communcate with friends.
I work as a Senior Voice Architect for a division of Bell Canada and have spent most of my career creating enterprise-grade, communication software applications.
I have also designed communications software deployed by the BC Ministry of Health (Maximus Canada) and for various organizations from Florida to California and all across Canada.
My philosophy for building mission-critical systems is simple and has served the companies I've worked for well:
The best software builds organizational capacity, not dependency.
I have written code for a variety of things;
to the right → are two of my favorites:
STIR/SHAKEN AS/VS Gateway
An application that handles call authentication and verification using digital certificates to prevent fraudulent caller ID spoofing.
When a vendor-sourced STIR/SHAKEN platform failed to meet organizational needs, I created an in-house solution that offered complete control over features, data governance, and workflows.
Leveraging established open-source tooling and libraries, what I delivered was:
- Proof-of-concept delivered in one week.
- Modern distributed, active-active, geo-redundant architecture that continues to achieve 100% availability, completing hundreds of millions of transactions.
- 5x increase in transactional performance compared to the vendor solution.
- 100% compliance with ATIS-1000082.v002 Framework for STIR/SHAKEN.
- Eliminated the vendor's transactional OpEx.
- Complete documentation handed to all stakeholders before "Go-Live".
Microsoft Certified Teams SBC:
A Session Border Controller [SBC] is a voice firewall that ensures secure, high-quality audio routing between Microsoft Teams and Bell Canada's voice network and the PSTN.
I took over this product's software development lifecycle in the fall of 2018, steering it through Microsoft's mandatory certification, initial release to production and overseeing the application lifecycle management through 3 code revisions.
Project highlights include:
- Participated in the development of Microsoft's Session Border Controller specification.
- Software as a Service [SaaS] model allowed our sales team to spin up and deploy fully operational SBCs for customers in minutes from a single web form.
- First to market product competing with hardware solutions from Audiocodes and Ribbon.
- Project revenue measured in millions of dollars.
Some technolgies I am well versed in:
- Session Initiation Protocol the foundational signaling protocol and primary backbone of modern voice and unified communications.
- Python a modern and one of the most in-demand programming languages in the world.
- Docker a foundational unit of compute in modern architectures, packaging applications into lightweight, isolated containers.
- Elasticsearch is the core database and analytics engine that powers the "ELK" or Elastic Stack
- Git a distributed version control system most commonly used by software developers.
- Javascript the foundational, native language executed by every major web browser.
In my free time, I enjoy running, biking, swimming. I have documented some it here.
